Actionscript and PHP

I'm kind of new to server-side stuff, and I was wondering if anybody here had any insight.
I have the following variables:

p1name:string
p2name:istring
p1attack:integer
p2attack:integer
p1life:integer
p2life:integer

I'd like to put them all on a single row in the DB, so I can have several sets without cluttering it up. Hopefully this means flash only needs to pull the one row.

Now, I don't know if I can have the php script running actively at the same time as flash, or if I can only use it to store the information. I want the script to update the variables whenever flash sends them, and send all of the variables back whenever a timer in the script reaches a certain time. This ensures synchronicity, dunnit?
